LA Live! (Exclamation Point Required)

That picture up above is what the corner of Olympic and Figueroa used to look like about two years ago.  Today there is over 1,000,000 square feet of construction taking place on the site and it feels like it has gone up almost over-night.  The project, which is being built by the company that owns the Lakers, includes a large live theater (Nokia Theater) a central plaza, ESPN broadcast studios, the Grammy Museum, a hotel complex with over 1,000 rooms and condos, a 14-screen cinema, conference facilities and a ton of restaurants, bars and night clubs and an abattoir (okay I made that last one up).  The overall intent was to provide an entertainment hot-spot to complement the Staples Center and Convention Center (which until recently has been a dud in terms of bringing in conventions).  I’ve spent the last couple of years working on the project, so I wanted to shoot some pictures out there, I think it’s pretty significant regardless of your thoughts on big ol’ corporate architecture…  For more pics (about 72) just hit up my Flikr account over there on the right.

  1. wow. as far as “corporate architecture” goes i think it looks fairly classy. not a huge fan of the whole “look we gotz dem digital screenz on columnz” but that first image is definitely its good side.

they people need to hire me to do signage systems, maps and logos. you know so i can afford to continue living in LA.

    Welcome to our New Downtown!

  3. Is the car wash (second photo) part of the whole deal as well? Are the Lakers trying to get LA types to wash their cars?

  5. […] I’m sure, very helpful for those who might have been lost and thought maybe they were down by the Convention Center.  At first I was only noticing them around Silver Lake and Echo Park and I thought perhaps they […]
