Big Retirement

First things first.  This blog got linked to Curbed LA last week which was very cool.  When I log into wordpress there are little stats that show me how many people read it each day and for that day it was about 15 times the usual readership (i.e. people whose living rooms I haven’t been inside).  I even got comments from strangers which is very cool.  Your comments–they nourish me–keep them coming, and if you’re new to this blog thanks for stopping by.

Now onto retired municipal employees.  I’ve noticed that these flyers usually tell you a lot about either the person who is retiring or the person who made the flyer.  In this case I think it tells us a lot about both.  Let’s start with the obvious.  Mr. Price has guns.  Or at least cartoon version of Mr. Price has guns.  This tells us something very obvious about Mr. Price and something very interesting and overly-revealing about whoever made the flyer.  The cartoon could have had a long sleaved shirt.  It could have used a straight line.  Instead we have cartoony biceps and a little office-crush somewhere in the LAFD.  Fascinating.  Also, we learn that Mr. Price loves and hates the environment: loves in the sense that he seems to plan to spend time there when he’s done working for the LAFD and hates in the sense that he seems to be trapsing through it in a big-ass GMC SUV.  The mere fact that this detail was included tells us that Mr. Price probably has spent a lot of time talking about his Yukon to his co-workers, posting pictures of it on his desktop, picking out just the right rims, etc.  Big guns, big SUV, big fee to get into this party, small… price to pay to say goodbye to a valued member of the City Family.  Farewell Mr. Price.

  1. I think it is clear the next step: attend one of these parties and report on accuracy of retirement poster. sounds like a fine night out on the town to me . . .

  2. Would you believe it is a (4 door) pickup used when he tows his vacation trailer? Thanks for the kind words for Ron, who has been a highly valued member of our LAFD family, and even more importantly, a deply devoted civil servant. See you at the dinner!

Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,
