Go Together Like a Horse and Carriage

I am asking my evangelical-minded friends a favor.  Could you please vote no on Proposition 8?

I respect that it is possible for some of you not to be super excited about the notion of same-sex marriage from a theological or faith-life perspective (and questioning both of those is a completely different matter), but I would love it if you could consider the issue from an American citizen civil rights standpoint instead.

After all, you’re probably not going to vote on a proposition to ban divorce, or require that people do pre-marital counseling with a pastor, or that they integrate Christian values into their marriage so that it truly reflects a covenant in the Old Testament sense–so why would you vote on an amendment to the State Constitution that implies that I am somehow a lesser Californian than many of the a-holes out there who marry and divorce like it’s a hobby or who have the freedom to procreate despite being abysmal failures as parents.  Is marriage as a civic institution really so sacred that Brittany Spears can use it like a fast food menu but I can’t get near it?

I think I’d be a pretty good husband, and I’m pretty sure I’d make a great dad, and I’d like it if the Los Angeles City Clerk didn’t have to be the one to tell me otherwise.

Besides, I think that Jesus likes it a lot more when I am treated as though there is some inherent value and dignity within me.  So do I.  Also, when I get married I’ll be throwing a really good party (remember, I’m gay?!).  On the other hand I won’t be throwing a life-partner-commitment-ceremony party.  That won’t even fit on an invitation.  So if you vote yes on Prop 8 you miss out on a great party.  Think about it.

  1. You’d be a much better husband/father than Michael, I’m sure. No contest.
