2009 is Just Fine

I usually roll my eyes at new years resolutions.  I think that when I was a kid (and swimming neck deep in the waters of Pentecostal hysteria) my resolutions usually involved trying not to get all hot and bothered about other boys.  It turns out that resolving to rewire your psychological and emotional wiring is a little unhealthy, and consequently I’ve just always had negative associations with the whole resolution thing.

This year I’m a little intrigued by the idea; so I’m going to give New Years Resolutions another try.  Here’s what I’m thinking:

1.  I’m going to run the LA Marathon.  It’s usually in March, right around my birthday, but it’s been moved to June (WTF, it’s HOT in June!).  So there is still time to train.  Ideally I’d like to finish in under 4 hours, but I’d be happy with just enjoying the experience and running the whole thing without getting convulsive and overwhelming leg cramps at mile 23 and having to crawl in the last 3 and some odd miles (which is what happened in 2005).

2.  I’m going to take a cooking class.  I’ve heard there are some good ones at the Brewery in Lincoln Heights.  I like cooking, but I kinda suck at it, so I’d really be into learning a thing or two.  I’m hoping there is one that teaches me how to make fabulous meals with a bag of frozen chicken breasts and Puffins cereal, because that’s what always seems to be in the house.

3.  I’m going to take a life drawing class.  I like to draw and there was once a time when I was pretty good at it.  But around high school drawing got more and more technical and then in college it started being pretty much just about buildings (which are generally very linear, and pretty easy to grasp).  At this point I’m lucky if I can handle Pictionary, so I’d like to spend time with some naked strangers and charcoal pencils.

So there it is.  In December 2009 let’s check in and see how things went.

  1. Happy new year! Although I could probably change my sexual orientation more easily than I could run a marathon in under four hours. But then again I’ve never tried either.

  3. If you’re interested in a great (but, um, sort of pricey) 14-week life drawing class, here’s where I work:

  5. If you find drawing buildings easy, then you’re a real artist and yes, it’s time to find a life drawing class and learn how easy people are to draw–you don’t even need a ruler.

Good to ring in the new year with you and Kenny!
