2005 Running Jamz

Filed under: Uncategorized — qualifiedcondition @ 7:21 am

One of the things that I loved doing back in my “heavy running days,” was putting together play lists for my little mp3 player (this was back when only Steve Jobs could afford an iPod).  Usually the playlists consisted of loud beatsy indie dance music–which to this day I don’t regret liking any of that stuff (the ska days, that’s another matter).  I even had songs that I considered to be 8-minute mile songs and 7-minute mile songs and so on.  I don’t know if I was running that fast per se, it was but some songs make you want to cruise along and some songs make you want to behave like you’re being chased by a hungry cheetah with a jet pack.

Here were some of my fav’s: (I’m not doing “quotes,” don’t make me!)

Adult – Hand to Phone (angry robot music–good for a long consistent straightaway)

The Rapture – either House of Jealous Lovers or Out of the Races… (screaming, countdowns, cow bells, c’mon!)

Franz Ferdinand – Michael (run flirt enducing, so that’s fun)

Hot Butter – Popcorn (elctro with crazy floaty fluty sounds, made run feel like part of a music montage in a crazy european movie)

B-52’s – 52 girls (it takes your mind of joint pain when you’re trying to memorize the names, Mercedes and Joan, Betty and Brenda)

Eagles of Death Metal – Pretty much anything, but Speaking in Tongues and Bad Dream Mama always made me feel like a bad ass.

Fischerspooner – Emerge (there’s something sexy about this song which is embarassing when I hear it with other people, which is why headphones are awesome).

Modern Loves – Government Center (I was contemplating re-entering civil service life, this song always makes me smile accordingly)

Spoon – Jonathan Fisk (lull-breaker, such a hardcore start it always woke me up and made me go faster)

Papas Fritas – The Way You Walk (a great get starter song because it’s slower paced and really fun)

My point is that I haven’t really bought music since right about then (which I think history will show was maybe my aesthetic plateau).  I need suggestions.  I am putty in your hands.

  1. Your 2005 jamz are more current than my 2009 jamz. In other words I have nothing to offer. I look forward to reading any suggestions you might get, though.

  2. I posted that comment before I saw “Popcorn” on your list. I really don’t know what to say except that that’s quite a pick. I thought I was the only normal person (other than David M.) who could handle that level of cheesiness in music and still enjoy it.

  3. It’s good to see some new posts!
As your self-appointed indievangelist music director, I receommend checking out Crystal Castles. And maybe Hot Chip. And MGMT. You’d be into Vampire Weekend too, but it isn’t really running music. they have the word vampire in their name though. That’s all for now.

  4. I don’t demand quotes, but I do demand a photo of a cheetah with a jetpack. AWESOME.
