The President Talks Smart Now

Yesterday Kenny and I got up early and took the train downtown to LA Live, which is a massive entertainment complex (still partially under construction) next to the Staples Center.  The central plaza has a couple of giant LED screens and they were playing the inauguration live.  I wanted to go because it seemed important to experience President Obama’s swearing-in in a place that is more public and memorable than someone’s cubicle with CNN streaming live and because I have been dying to experience the public space around LA Live in a way that doesn’t involve Britney Spears or other things that suck.

The inauguration was indeed memorable (and not just because Justice Roberts tripped on his lines like a 7th grade drama student).  There were a couple thousand people packed in and around the plaza, and when the people in Washington D.C. cheered we cheered as though we were there.  I think that I would have had more fun if I had shown up in one of the many tastefully silksreened Obama shirts that seem to be on the market, but it was a wonderful morning all the same.

  1. We were there, too! http://breadandbread.blogspot.com/2009/01/inauguration-celebration.html

I remember thinking the crowd wasn’t so huge, but it was clearly big enough to swallow you guys whole. Yay to civic life.
