I Was Only Joking..!

David Byrne was on the Colbert Report this evening.  I didn’t watch it because I was in the bathtub having an old lady soak, but I could hear it.  The interview (which was much better than I have seen out of the Psycho Killer) got me thinking about how much I love pretty much all Talking Heads songs, but have never been able to force myself to be into Bryne’s solo career.  “This Must Be the Place” is cleaning house with my mom on Saturdays and “Burning Down the House” is in the back seat of her Thunderbird on the way to Vons.  Happy childhood nostalgia that happens to be hip and relevant today.  Any Byrne-only song is some esoteric thing I heard once in college.

And then it occurred to me that I have similar feelings about Morrissey.  I’ll sing along to any song by The Smiths (and my iPod sure isn’t shy about playing them), but the Morrissey-only songs always give me pause.  Sure there are some good ones, but it’s like this giant “Does not play well with others” on his report card that I can’t get over.  Go make nice with Johnny Marr and I’ll buy your new album.

Then my mind wandered to John Cleese who left Mony Python on not the best terms with the other Python fellows and things boiled down to a fundeamental question for me.  Why can’t tall white guys with Frankensteiny shaped heads get along with the people they work with?

  1. and by the way.. this is what morrissey looks like these days. http://perezhilton.com/2009-02-06-attack-of-the-moz

  2. I am jealous of your old lady soak. Our building never has enough hot water. Speaking of childhood nostalgia, my mom used to disappear into the bathroom once a week with a bag of tortilla chips, a bowl of queso, a quart of white wine, and a stack of paperbacks. My dad built her one of those little wooden shelves that fit on a clawfoot bathtub. Cheaper than marriage counseling, I guess.

  3. But really, has there ever been a solo effort that ended up being better than the group it came out of? I’m honestly trying to think of one but can’t. Lauren Hill out of the Fugees comes to mind, although it’s quite arguable that the Fugees were better. I’d say Beyonce’s solo work was better than anything from Destiny’s Child, but it’s a tough comparison since I’m fairly certain my interest in both is 90% ironic.

  4. @ L. Hollyfeld: and don’t forget the genius spawn of Genesis — Mr. Phil “music I had to listen to while my parents were getting divorced” Collins.

  5. I still remember the time in college when you wrote “Qu’est-ce que c’est?” in the dust on my windshield. I had that song stuck in my head for days. Ah, good times.

    • Yeah, but I’m pretty sure that I didn’t spell it like that. (And by “that” I mean “correctly.”)
