Save the Daylight!

Filed under: Uncategorized — qualifiedcondition @ 11:56 pm

I am contemplating leaving my office soon, and struck by a very compelling and moving sight out my window:light

No, it’s not an oversaturation of 1960s grid and box mid-rise towers–it’s DAYLIGHT!  It’s almost time to go home and it’s still light outside!

The possibilities of what I can now do with my evening are endless; it’s like there is a full day ahead of me.  I can mow the lawn, wash the car, go for a run, cure cancer, bake a cake… and bedtime is no where in sight!

Really, this begs the question: other than the prize of an extra hour of sleep on a single Sunday (and maybe the following Monday), why the eff do we ever go back to Standard Time?  Aren’t we pretty much unified in our love of Daylight Savings Time?  Shouldn’t it be the “standard” time and shouldn’t “Standard” time be called “Sucking Hours Away From Your Day” time?

  1. A group of people who probably uniformly hate DST are the parents of young children. “Falling back” and “springing forward” are equally hellish.

  2. But with all those extra daylight hours, can’t you force your kids to do an hour of extra chores per night – balance your checkbook, make your dinner, and mix up your evening cocktail?
