Qualified Condition

When I was a kid my stepdad would complain about knee pain all the time.  When we’d go to Disneyland he’d have to sit down a lot, and in general we avoided long walks.  He’d blame high school football for ruining his leg hinges, and eventually, when I was in college, he had double knee surgery.

I, on the other hand, did not play high school football.  I delivered pizza and took drafting which both tend to be fairly low impact.  I had not experienced breaking a sweat doing anything athletic until my mid-twenties.

I now have “knee problems.”  Son of a bitch.  My last long run (remember, I’m training for the marathon) was 10 miles and it felt generally okay–good actually.  Since then I’ve not been able to go more than 2.5 miles without some pretty sharp knife like stabbing feelings in my left knee.

I have a call in to my doctor to find out if we need to amputate or if maybe I just need to stop running like a spaz.  I’m a little bummed, but trying not to be dramatic.  It’s just that running is a really inexpensive hobby, and if I have to get into cycling instead, then I’m going to have to buy all that spandex.

    • I had to Google “recumbent bike” whilst thinking to myself, “I hope this is what I think it is!” Sure enough, it was. I hope mine has a flag.
BTW, I bike past (passed?) your house every morning craving a hello. Maybe you could hang a sign or something if you’re not going to be up and at’em that early.

  2. Post-hernia (which means I have what, a “bad abdominal wall”?) getting injured in unexpected ways is my favorite thing to worry about. I read an article in one of C.C.’s running magazines that had me convinced my foot had somehow broken without me knowing it. Aging sucks.

  3. So, does this mean you don’t wear spandex when you run?

  5. I tried training with Tina for a while for her half-marathon and my back started giving me issues. I’m thinking recumbent might be the answer, but then I’d have to become a professor and I’m not sure I’m smart enough for that.
